Good design is everything! Although many roads lead to Rome and tastes are all too different, there are a few essential characteristics you should bear in mind when designing print products. Professional graphic designer Dagmar Yanbak explains below what to look for when choosing fonts and gives tips on how to make the most of graphic elements.
“I would say you should always try to find the balance,” answers Dagmar Yanbak. Strong colours that serve as eye-catchers should therefore be used specifically in the design in order to evoke emotions in the target audience. “In the logo of people at home, it is the red cross that catches the eye in color and is important for the message of the corporate design because it is a care service,” explains the graphic designer. When developing a holistic corporate identity, you should generally limit yourself to two to three colours and only specify one or two fonts.
If you’d like to use a playful design technique – for invitation cards, for example – you should always make sure it’s properly executed. “Especially when it comes to hand lettering, legibility is always the first priority,” says Dagmar Yanbak. In principle, you should avoid combining too many colours, fonts and font sizes in a design.

The typeface that you want to use in your design should always be appropriate for the project and the concept. “It’s a good idea to experiment less with handwriting or hand lettering and use these techniques only where it really makes sense,” explains Dagmar Yanbak. “I’d rather let the graphic elements work and have the script support them with a clear statement.”
When combining different fonts, don’t forget that the typefaces have to harmonize with each other to create an appealing whole. “In the beginning this means trying out and changing a lot. But you soon get a sense of what fits what,” says Dagmar Yanbak
The integration of graphic elements always depends on the project. “Individually designed icons to support content points can be a practicable option,” says the graphic designer. Graphic components always serve to accentuate or loosen up the design product. “I often use colored areas to highlight individual texts. I also like to use elements from the corporate brochure designing to create patterns that then serve as backgrounds”.
