corporate brochure designing

Have you always wanted to know how a professional graphic designer works? We asked Dagmar Yanbak and found out what is really important when it comes to a good design. Below you’ll find three essential tips to help you avoid creative cardinal mistakes.

What does a graphic designer do?

A graphic designer is responsible for the visual design of a meaningful message using artistic and technical tools.
Only decades ago, graphic artists drew exclusively with pen and brush and were regarded as visual artists. Nowadays, in the digital age it is impossible to imagine the work of a graphic designer without the computer with its manifold design possibilities. Over the years, a multifaceted professional field has emerged that has remained true to one basic requirement: creativity.

What is the profession of a graphic designer?

“The freelance graphic designer Dagmar Yanbak is certain that “the combination of creativity and technology”. Nowadays, not only artistic skills but also technical know-how – such as programming skills – are indispensable for working successfully in the industry. Nevertheless, the experienced use of paper and pencil is considered to be decisive for the professional implementation of classic designs. Dagmar Yanbak advises against focusing too much on the latest trends. She herself prefers the fusion of old and new.

Design language and brainstorming

Basically, the chosen design language should be oriented to the respective customer or his intention. “For orders such as a logo for a children’s art school or a wedding invitation, I like to use playful design possibilities. With a client such as a tax office or a nursing service, the approach is more straightforward,” explains the trained graphic designer.

In her search for the right design technique, Dagmar Yanbak tries to go in as many directions as possible in order to find the final design, which ultimately “clicks”: “I try to give each project, no matter how rigid the framework conditions, a personal touch. The professional graphic designer normally already actively involves the customer in the intermediate steps that arise. “This creates a high degree of satisfaction and saves more time in the end, because the customer has to like it in the end!

3 tips from the graphic designer: Ideas – Concepts – Inspirations

Good design is everything! Although many roads lead to Rome and tastes are all too different, there are a few essential characteristics you should bear in mind when designing print products. Professional graphic designer Dagmar Yanbak explains below what to look for when choosing fonts and gives tips on how to make the most of graphic elements.

1. What you should always keep in mind with a design

“I would say you should always try to find the balance,” answers Dagmar Yanbak. Strong colours that serve as eye-catchers should therefore be used specifically in the design in order to evoke emotions in the target audience. “In the logo of people at home, it is the red cross that catches the eye in color and is important for the message of the corporate design because it is a care service,” explains the graphic designer. When developing a holistic corporate identity, you should generally limit yourself to two to three colours and only specify one or two fonts.

If you’d like to use a playful design technique – for invitation cards, for example – you should always make sure it’s properly executed. “Especially when it comes to hand lettering, legibility is always the first priority,” says Dagmar Yanbak. In principle, you should avoid combining too many colours, fonts and font sizes in a design.

Creative hand lettering like this is particularly demanding in the graphic design and should always be carried out cleanly so that the desired effect can also be achieved in printing:

2. the design of the font: This is what you should keep in mind

The typeface that you want to use in your design should always be appropriate for the project and the concept. “It’s a good idea to experiment less with handwriting or hand lettering and use these techniques only where it really makes sense,” explains Dagmar Yanbak. “I’d rather let the graphic elements work and have the script support them with a clear statement.”

When combining different fonts, don’t forget that the typefaces have to harmonize with each other to create an appealing whole. “In the beginning this means trying out and changing a lot. But you soon get a sense of what fits what,” says Dagmar Yanbak

3. how to integrate graphic elements

The integration of graphic elements always depends on the project. “Individually designed icons to support content points can be a practicable option,” says the graphic designer. Graphic components always serve to accentuate or loosen up the design product. “I often use colored areas to highlight individual texts. I also like to use elements from the corporate brochure designing to create patterns that then serve as backgrounds”.
